About the “I’m Here” Art ProjecT
A Collective art project Inspired by the AIDS Quilt
In 1987, volunteers unveiled a massive quilt made up of 1,920 panels honoring people who died of AIDS. Inspired by this powerful act of remembrance and visibility, we are creating a modern tribute that honors the lives, presence, and resilience of Queer and Trans youth today.
At the event, participants will be invited to select a leftover or donated clothing item from the swap and transform it into a personal art piece expressing a simple but powerful message:
“I’m Here.”
Using our art supply station, participants can decorate their piece with messages, symbols, textures, and designs that reflect their identity, story, or feelings—there is no right or wrong way to create.
Each completed piece will be photographed and shared in a digital gallery on Give Us The Floor’s website and social media. Participants may choose to be credited or remain anonymous. The result will be a growing, shareable archive that allows youth to be seen in a way that feels safe and affirming.
If successful, we hope to bring this project to other cities and expand the “I’m Here” archive to uplift queer youth voices nationwide.
This event is dedicated to Sam Nordquist.
Sam was more than another story about a Trans life tragically and horrifically taken too soon in Rochester. He was a son, a sibling, a friend, a member of this community.
His life mattered. His identity mattered. And his memory calls us to create a safer, more compassionate world for 2SLGBTQIA+ people.
As we honor Sam, we stand together in community, strength, and hope, with a commitment to uplifting one another and building a future where every life is valued.
